Wheat Rava Semiya Upma is a famous South Indian dish made with semolina or coarse wheat grains. Loaded with vegetables and roasted dals, upma is a favourite breakfast dish in various parts of India. Here is an Andhra special Wheat Rava (godhumarava) Semiya Upma.


Upma, uppumavu or uppittu is a traditional breakfast dish. It shares its origin across Western India (Maharashtra), Southern India and Sri Lanka. It can be prepared easily quickly. Apart from this it is a healthy and tasty snack.


Preparing Upma:

Upma is usually made with semolina (rava or suji). The most basic method is lightly dry-roasting the rava and mixing it thoroughly with a little salt and adding boiling-hot water. There are many ways upma by which upma is prepared; indeed, every cook has his/her own way of making upma. The difference between upma dishes is the spices, vegetables used, or the style of tadka. Upma can be spicy or mild in taste.


The upma is served hot. It can be made with semolina, vermicelli (Semiya) or oats. It can be topped with grated vegetables, curry leaves or a spoon of ghee (clarified butter). You can also make upma with leftover idlis. Just mash them and follow the remaining recipe.

Upma is a liked by kids and grown-ups alike. It is a great dish for elders and also for people on diet.


The Wheat Rava Semiya Upma is an Andhra style upma. It uses grounded wheat grains or Godumarava and vegetables. The special thing about this upma is the semiya used.

In this simple recipe, first fry vegetables in oil and mustard seeds. Then boil in water until soft. Then add rava and semiya. Mix till soft. Your fresh and tasty upma is ready; Serve it with coconut chutney or pickle or sambhar.

Preparation Steps of Wheat Rava Semolina Upma

  1. Chop the veggies of carrots, beans, ginger, and the onions finely.
  2.  Chop the green chillis.
  3. In a pan, add oil, and add green chilli and curry leaves.
  4. Now add the onions and heat till the onions becomes soft and turns pink.
  5. Now add the veggies and saute for 2 minutes in a medium flame.
  6. Add 2 cups of water to this and add salt to taste.
  7. Boil the water till the veggies becomes soft, in a medium flame.
  8. Now simmer the flame,  slowly add the wheat flour and semiya and stir continuously without any lumps.
  9. Cook till the upma becomes soft and the water gets completely absorbed.
  10. Turn off the heat and leave it for 2-3 minutes with cover.
  11. Serve hot with coconut chutney or pickle.
