Dosa is a speciality of the South-Indian breakfast menu. This dish is a yeast and rice based breakfast. It resembles a pancake. Except that dosa does not contain eggs in them. They are purely vegetarian. They can either be prepared soft (like pancakes) or crisp (like wafer). This is one such dish that is easy to prepare and fun to eat.

In addition, dosa is low on fat and is dairy free. The yeast is a proactive bacteria. It has nutrients of the curd. The yeast gets active when the batter rests well. Dosa is one such dish that you can eat at any time of the day. Moreover, dosa has become one of the favourite Indian dish for many foreigners.

There are many varieties of dosa. The most famous types of dosa are plain dosa, masala dosa, onion dosa, set dosa, rava dosa and many more.


This dosa is made from plantains or raw bananas. You can find this banana in the market because they are easily available. The exterior of the banana is dark green and the structure is quite firm. The main ingredient of the raw banana dosa is plantain, rice and salt. The addition of the plantain gives an extra taste dimension to the dosa. However, this batter should rest for at least 5 minutes before you can use it.

Every household has a different addition to this recipe of raw banana dosa. Some may also include ragi, other pulses and cereals into the batter. Some may add buttermilk to it. Moreover, the raw banana dosa makes a healthy and hearty breakfast.

While preparing this dosa, it is important to keep some points in mind.

  • Cook on a medium flame for making it crisp
  • Cook on a high flame for making it soft
  • The batter can be stored for 2 days
  • Use a non-stick pan
  • Be generous with the oil
  • Ghee is a good alternate to oil
  • Serve it hot

Preparation Steps of Plantain Dosa Raw Banana Dosa

1. Add dices of plantain, rice and yoghurt into a blender and blend the mixture until it turns into a fine dough.

2. Check for consistency of the dough. Add a little water and mix it well to bring the dough to a good consistency. The dough should not be too tight or too runny.

3. Now add a little salt into the dough for taste and mix it well

4. Let the dough sit for few minutes while you prepare the spicy topping

5. Take the sesame seeds, dried coconut and dry red chillies into a blender and make a fine powder of the mixture. Your topping is ready.

6. Take a non-stick pan and heat it on medium flame.

7. Pour one scoop of dough, enough for 1 thin and fluffy pancake / dosa. Do not pour too much dough for 1 pancake / dosa, else you will end up with a thick and chunky dosa

8. Use few drops of melted butter or cooking oil to pour along the crease of pancake / dosa and pour few drops on top too. My recommendation is to use Ghee / Clarified Indian Butter for best taste.

9. Now sprinkle the spicy topping powder evenly on the pancake / dosa

10. Once the edges start to turn golden brown, flip the pancake / dosa, let it cook for couple of minutes or less, as needed.

Crispy and Spicy Plantain Dosa is ready!
