If you are someone who is not from India and trying to make recipes from Indian cuisine, this should be in your “To Make” list. It is good source of protein, almost all Indian vegetarians depend on these preparations called “Daal” for daily intake of Protein. I hail from Gujarat and let me share, how we make Daal in Gujarat?

Preparation Steps of Indian Toor Daal -Healthy preparation of Pigeon Peas.


  1. wash split and skinned pigeon peas properly in a bowl.
  2. take water three times to the pigeon peas, pressure cook pigeon peas, water, Green mango slices, asfoetida in cooker till 4-6 whistles.
  3. While pigeon peas are getting pressure cooked, you could start preparing spices for Daal.
  4. Heat the oil in one pan, once oil is hot to the good extent, add cumin seeds, kasmiri mirch,garlic in it. Once cumin seeds start cracking, empty the daal from pressure cooker into this pan.
  5. Add Chili powder,salt, curry powder in daal and heat it till 2-3 minutes. while you are doing it you could add more water if you feel daal is too thick.
  6. Your daal is ready to serve.
