Dalia sheera is a dessert that is prepared by making use of milk, ghee, dalia and jaggery or sugar. Many may be unaware of what ‘dalia’ is. Dalia is the Indian name for broken wheat.
Wheat when broken and made small to the size of thick rava (semolina) is known as dalia. Dalia is a high source of dietary fibres. Although the dalia is rich in gluten and carbs, it makes an amazing sheera. Sheera, in other words, is nothing but halwa. Halwa is a sort of pudding that is sweet, soft in texture and rich in flavour.

The dalia sheera is a rather exquisite dish that not many are quite aware of. However, this dessert is perfect for those who are indulging in the Navratri celebrations.

Preparation Steps of Dalia Sheera (Broken Wheat Halwa/Pudding)


  1. Add 1 cup of water and jaggery to a pan.
  2. Heat and bring to boil. Stir till jaggery dissolves.
  3. Take it off the heat and keep it aside.
  4. Heat a thick bottomed pan.
  5. Add ghee and dalia. Stir it on a medium heat.
  6. Keep stirring dalia for 4-5 minutes until aromatic.
  7. Add 1 cup of water and mix it well with the Dalia.
  8. Cover with a lid and let Dalia cook for 2-3 minutes.
  9. Cook until the water is absorbed by dalia. This may take for 4-5 minutes. Dalia will be half cooked by this time.
  10. Strain the dissolved jaggery water over dalia. If adding sugar, add it now. Mix well.
  11. Cover and cook for another 2-3 minutes or till all the water is absorbed and dalia is fully cooked.
  12. Add more water if needed.
  13. When Dalia is fully cooked, add the chopped dry fruits and cardamom powder. Mix and switch off.
